| Bill's Service Records indicate several postings within Canada during training, his main Pilot Training was undertaken at Victoriaville, Quebec and Stanley, Nova Scotia. He embaked overseas for the United Kingdom in December 1941, ultimately joining 101 Squadron flying Wellington Bombers and moving with the Squadron to R.A.F. Holme-On-Spalding-Moor where they re-equiped with the Lancaster Bomber. Bill was a fine pilot, and some idea of his skill can be gained from reading 'Bill' Collett's account of the crash they suffered together in a Wellington bomber before converting to Lancasters. |

Bill was single when he enlisted,
but by the time he shipped overseas he was a married man.
His new wife was Kathleen Stella McLane of New Glasgow,
they had a son William Garfield Spinney (Bill Jnr.) who
was born on the 23-February-1942, while Bill was with 101
Squadron in England. Many thanks to Bill (Jnr) for
helping to make this Tribute possible. In the tragic way of war, father & son never met. |
