As a young man Bill was a keen Sportsman, his R.C.A.F Attestation Paper asked which sports were engaged in.
His Reply "Hockey (Extensively), Football (Extensively), Baseball (Moderately), Softball (Extensively), Basketball (Moderately), Tennis (Moderately), Swimming (Extensively) and Badminton (Moderately)."
Bill's Attestation Paper also notes that he had an interest in Aviation and wanted to be a Pilot or Observer, he had a knowledge of Electrical and Radio work and that as a hobby he built model planes.

During the summer of 1936 Bill worked at Thompson & Sutherlands Hardware store in Stellarton before returning to school. He went to work there full-time on Graduating in 1937. He attended Summer Camp with the 7th A A battery in 1937, 1938 and 1939. At the outbreak of war, later in 1939, he enlisted with them before transfering to the 1st A A Battery and finally in 1940 fulfilled his wish by transfering to the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was a volunteer twice over, firstly by enlisting and additionaly all Bomber Command Aircrew were volunteers within the Air Force.
