Letter from O.C. 101 Squadron to Jacob Spinney

Dear Mr. Spinney

It is with the profound regret of the entire Squadron that I write you regarding the sad loss of your son R.88087 Sgt. Spinney, J.W, who lost his life on active Service in this country.

The aircraft while on a training flight crashed at 4am on the morning of the 16th. November in the neighbourhood of Dolwen Hill, Llanefyl, Montgomeryshire, N. Wales, and your Son and other members of the Crew were instantly killed. The cause of the crash is as yet unknown.

This is a great loss to the Squadron as your son was a popular member of a fine crew, and a very experienced, and capable Pilot.

His work has been most valuable and excellant as his record of Operational Sorties well testifies, and the courage he displayed in the execution of his duty was always beyond reproach and a fine example to others.

Your son's funeral was arranged by the Royal Air Force with full Service Honours, and took place at 2.30 pm on the 20th November at Towyn Cemetery, Marionethshire, N. Wales, the service being conducted by a Methodist Minister.

May I now express the great sympathy which all of us feel with you in the sad loss you have sustained, and I should like also to assure you how greatly appreciated is the Service your Son has given so far from home.

Yours sincerely,

D.A.Reddick

Wing Commander, Commanding,

No.101 Squadron, RAF
