| From the age of 6 in 1928 until 1934 Bill attended Waipawa Primary School. |

| In 1935 he started attending Waipawa District High School, where he was clearly a fine scholar and sporstman. He was Captain of the School's Rugby 1st XV and the Cricket 1st XI, Bill was also a Tennis and Harrier [cross country running] Champion. He graduated from High School gaining a Higher Level Certificate and passing the University Entrance Examination. After High School he studied at Victoria University College, taking courses in Mathematics and Psychology. |
| After leaving school Bill went to work at the Public Service Commission of the Internal Affairs Department, in Wellington. On 12th August 1940 he applied for enlistment in Aircrew. |
