Success at training very much depended on aptitude for the required task. It turned out that being a Wireless Operator was not Derek's forte and he went on finally to train as an Air Gunner |

So it was that on 8/11/42 he was posted to 101 Squadron. Just at the time that they were converting type from Vickers Wellington to the Avro Lancaster. |
