STELLARTON FLYER KILLED OVERSEAS

The Town of Stellarton was deeply saddened this morning when it was learned that Sergeant Pilot James William (Bill) Spinney R.C.A.F. son of Conductor & Mrs J Spinney, Stellarton, had been killed in action overseas on November 16. No further details of the fatality have been received.

He was married to the former Kathleen McLane of New Glasgow and has a nine month old son, whom he has never seen.

Sergeant Spinney enlisted in Stellarton with the 7th AA Battery at the outbreak of the war and later transferred to the 1st AA Battery. Anxious to become a flyer he again transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force about two years ago and after completing his training in Canada went overseas where he arrived on December 23rd 1941. He was a graduate of both Stellarton and New Glasgow High Schools and served on the staff of Thompson & Sutherland in Stellarton, a position he held when he enlisted.

Bill Spinney was the embodiment of all the finest principles of youth and a fine gentleman in every sense of the word. He leaves to mourn not only his family but a host of friends throughout Pictou County, where he was well known. he is survived by his wife and one son, his Father & Mother, three brothers, Kenneth & Clarence of New Glasgow, Donald in Toronto and two sisters, Evelyn (Mrs Peter MacLennan) in Halifax and Mary, student nurse at Victoria General Hospital, Halifax.
