R.A.F. Towyn

A book by Wing Commander David Annand which details the work of the base, among other duties this included Search and Rescue operations in respect of the many aircraft and crews that came to grief in this area of Wales.

 

 
Wing Commander Annand's account of W4326

" 16th November (1942) 10.00 hrs, information that an unidentified aircraft had crashed at Dolwen Hill, Llanerfyd, Montgomeryshire. Police reported aircraft crashed after an explosion in the air at 04.00 hrs."

" Aircraft unrecognisable, being scattered over an area 3 miles by 1/2 a mile. From documents found it was concluded to be a LANCASTER from 101 Squadron, Special duties No. W4326 based Holme-in-Spalding Moor, Yorkshire"

"4 bodies recovered by Police. M.O. found 2 further bodies. 1 body * never found"

*Sgt. Gould was found later and buried with his comrades in Towyn Cemetery
