"Many
thanks for your numerous papers and weeklies - boy they
are welcome, I read every darn line in them, ....... I
saw in the ones received today that Pam ****** was
engaged, Holy Mackeral I believe it wasn't so many years
ago I went to one of her Bithday parties ............ It
looks as though I will have to bring my own bride home
with me as all the NZ girls make their last bid before
the boys sail away." "Well we are all still alive and well although there are a lot of chaps who left with me from New Zealand that have been killed - there are only a few of us left now." "We have finished operations as far as Wellingtons are concerned................converting to a big new four engined bomber - the Lancaster ............... so now I am the only NZ'er in the plane with two Canadians and four R.A.F.............. The new kite is very nice to fly in I only wish we could fly her out to New Zealand." "Had a weeks leave in London at the end of September and Oh Boy! was it wild or was it wild. I'll say it was! Still life is like that over here, especially on an operational station as when you see chaps going out and then not coming back --- you want to see some of the sergeants parties .............." "Well I have quite a few ops now and have been pretty well all over Germany ........... The old Hun really tries to entertain you when invade his domain, he puts on the most wonderful fireworks display you ever did see ......... Light tracer comes up at you just like a hose of fire, while the 'heavies' poop away and you see lovely orange flashes ......... hundreds of searchlights weave about the sky, yes sir a raid on a place like Essen, Breman or Hamburg is an experience you could never forget." "I have been over Germany at all heights from 2000 feet (not healthy) up to 22000 ................. night-fighter likes to lurk up high waiting for some unsuspecting bomber .............. we have been chased plenty of times ........... but only hit once and that once was enough as he hit us everywhere and knocked out our rear gunner" " Cheerio, ........Bill ." |
